Youth Council Works to Connect with Government
WorkSource and many others sponsor groundbreaking new advisory panel.

Youth Council members on the steps of City Hall A recent survey found that the majority of students in Travis County have NEVER made a decision that affected their school or community. In addition, over half of Travis County 's public school students are considered economically disadvantaged by the U.S. Census Bureau, and nearly 20% of all students do not complete high school.

In an effort to mitigate and overcome these challenges facing area youth, the Ready by 21 (RB21) Coalition has created a Youth Council, consisting of students and recent graduates from Travis County 's schools. The Youth Council aims to engage fellow students and local government in working together to improve schools and communities.

Bobby Padgett at Captain Mac’s MarineCaptain Mac's Marine sits on a quiet two-lane road near Lake Walter E. Long in East Austin . The full-service boat shop sprawls across several acres of land, watercraft of all sizes resting in various stages of sea-worthiness. For 25 years, Captain Mac's has been repairing and selling boats, trailers, cars, and parts to the anglers, pleasure-cruisers, and serious boaters that frequent the popular lake.

In September 2006, the company approached WorkSource – Business Services for assistance in hiring a mechanic with very specific qualifications and experience. WorkSource was able to provide candidate referrals, and the company found a mechanic to fit their needs. As Vickie Drake, Human Resources, remembers, “ WorkSource was so easy to work with. We told them what we needed, they sent us referrals, and we just picked the best candidates.” So it's no surprise that when the company needed two more employees in April 2007, they came right back to WorkSource, who were again able to provide qualified referrals.

In early April, Max returned home from an abbreviated stay at Naval Station Great Lakes in Chicago , having received a medical discharge before completing Basic Training. He had enlisted in the Navy with the primary purpose of acquiring Dental Assistant training, but he never even had the chance to put on set of scrubs.
