WorkSource Receives Green Energy Grant
Grant provides support for Renewable/Sustainable Energy industry

Solar energy powers a light-bulb Solar energy is one of the most important forces in nature. It fuels flora, provides sustenance, and inspires growth. It also helps create jobs.

Recent studies have shown that the Renewable/Sustainable Energy industry has the potential to create a significant amount of new jobs – as many as 1.1 million in the next 10 years. WorkSource wants to make sure that many of those employment opportunities come to Central Texas.

WorkSource to Help Employers Connect with Blind Job-Seekers
New program will provide job-matching and subsidized internships.

Blind employee Brian SimmonsKaren Stephens* has been blind her entire life. She had been working from home for years, but last spring decided she needed to find employment that would get her out of the house. She heard about WorkSource at the Division for Blind Services (DBS) and began visiting the Career Center on a regular basis - utilizing WorkInTexas, Dell Learning Center, and the weekly Job Club.

It was at a WorkSource Job Club meeting that she met the recruiting manager for Sears. She turned that meeting into an interview, and then into full-time employment. She started work at the Sears Round Rock Call Center last July, and is appreciative of the support and assistance that WorkSource staff provided.

Community Tax Centers Provide Dual Benefits
WorkSource and others host free income tax preparation.

Free tax preparation Since 2004, Foundation Communities has hosted Community Tax Centers (CTC) in Austin. WorkSource has been honored to be a part of the project, hosting a CTC at its North Career Center each year. What motivates WorkSource to partner with the CTC program, besides the very tangible and important benefits to low-income individuals, is how the service impacts the overall economic landscape of Travis County.

•  WorkSource extends a fond farewell to outgoing Executive Director Shirley Knox, who is resigning at the end of April after seven successful years. During her tenure WorkSource achieved many notable successes, received numerous awards, including the Ted E. Small Grand Prize from the National Association of Workforce Boards, and raised over $14 million in grants. Under her leadership WorkSource’s budget doubled to $37 million in 2006. “It will be a challenge to find a successor that will serve the citizens of Travis County as well as Ms. Knox has,” noted Bill Imhoff, WorkSource Board Chair. “Everyone at WorkSource wishes her the best of luck in all her future endeavors.” The Board plans to appoint the new Executive Director in early May.

Unemployment Rate Remains Unchanged

According to the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), the unemployment rate for the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area* (MSA) rose slightly between November 2006 and February 2007 from 3.7 to 3.8 percent.

Career Center Visits for 2006
The three WorkSource – Career Centers received 494,857 visits in 2006, or an average of 1,356 per day.
 
·      North (6505 Airport Boulevard) = 218,879
·      South (4175 Freidrich Lane) = 141,909
·      East (3401 Webberville Road) = 134,069
 
There were 422,440 recorded customer visits to the Career Centers in 2005.
 
The customer visits are tracked by electronic counters on the Career Center doors and count all visits, not just unique visitors.
