WorkSource News Briefs
- Don't forget: WorkSource will be known as Workforce Solutions – Capital Area starting June 1st . We'll be offering all the same great services to the citizens and employers of Travis County, under a slightly different name.
- The recent partnership (see last issue) with Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) – Employment Workshops, an Employer Forum, and a Job Fair – has started paying dividends. University of Texas (UT) was one of the employers invited to participate in the activities, and as a result they have contacted DARS to begin the process of hiring persons with disabilities. UT is a large and influential employer in Travis County and WorkSource commends them for this step and is hopeful others follow their example.
- Remember Max? Taylor “Max” Haas, who was profiled two issues ago, has completed his Dental Assistant training and is now working full-time as a Hygienist Assistant and on his way to making $19/hour. Max remains grateful for the help he received from WorkSource, and WorkSource sends out a well-deserved “ Kudos! ”
- Add one more to the list! WorkSource received $180,420 from Texas Workforce Commission for Apprenticeship Training. The grant awarded funds for five Apprenticeship Training Providers to train nearly 1,200 Journeyworkers, Apprentices, and Pre-Apprentices as Electricians, Sheet Metal Workers, and Floor Installation Technicians.
- On March 6th, WorkSource participated in the 12th Annual College & Career Pathways Fair at the Palmer Event Center . The Fair, which is coordinated by Skillpoint Alliance, attracted over 2,800 high school students from around Central Texas .
- WorkSource is a role model! Delegates from Saudi Aramco, a Saudi Arabian Oil Company, visited WorkSource on March 20th to learn about Texas ' workforce development system. The delegates were treated to a presentation by our own Tamara Atkinson that highlighted WorkSource's successes as an employment intermediary, and took home some tips on how to start a similar organization in their country.
